Itinerary

Day 1:Rau Forest Day Tour

This full-day hike takes you deep into one of Moshi’s most treasured green spaces—home to natural springs, sacred trees, and fascinating wildlife. Rau Forest is a catchment forest, playing a crucial role in water conservation and local livelihoods. Along the trail, you’ll encounter:

  • Black-and-white colobus monkeys (Colobus guereza)

  • Blue monkeys

  • Colorful butterflies, forest birds, squirrels, and, with some luck, the elusive dik-dik in certain parts of the forest.

Cultural Significance:

The forest holds deep cultural value to the local communities who’ve lived around it for generations. One of the highlights is a visit to a massive, ancient East African teak tree (Milicia excelsa), locally known as Mvule Mkuu. Traditionally used by local healers for spiritual and medicinal purposes, this sacred tree is believed to ward off evil spirits and is still a site for rituals today.

🌱 Conservation in Action:

You’ll also have the option to contribute to local conservation efforts by:

  • Spending 30–45 minutes in our tree nursery, helping to water and care for seedlings.

  • Planting a tree as part of our reforestation initiative to protect this precious ecosystem.

Beyond the Forest:

From the southern edge of the forest, the walk continues into lush rice paddies, where over 3,000 hectares are cultivated through traditional irrigation methods. These fields are also a haven for over 20 migratory bird species, making it a wonderful spot for birdwatchers. Keep your eyes out for:

  • Storks, jacanas, ibises, egrets, herons, and more (species vary with the seasons).

End with a Local Treat:

Your journey ends with a warm welcome and a hearty, home-cooked local lunch at Mama’s Place, located just outside the forest entrance—featuring traditional dishes and fresh flavors.
